~Community Fine Arts Center~

The Community Fine Arts Center features a changing exhibition schedule of local, regional, and national painters, sculptors, printers, photographers, and craft artists. National traveling exhibitions are also on the calendar, offering traditional and non-traditional displays of contemporary art in America.

~Expedition Island~

Expedition Island is a National Historical Site due to its role as the starting point for two expeditions down the Green and Colorado Rivers led by Powell in 1869 and 1871. Powell began both trips near Expedition Island and mapped the river system, successfully documenting the Grand Canyon. It’s generally considered that on these expeditions Powell completed the exploration of the last, large unknown land area in the continental United States.

Expedition Island Park is a 7.1 acre community park located at 475 South Second East Street in Green River. A great family gathering spot, Expedition Island Park has a play area and numerous other recreational opportunities. This island oasis is the perfect spot for family picnics and Blue Ribbon trout fishing. It also serves as the ideal launching off point for tubing, kayaking and rafting on the river.

~Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area~

Located along the 91 mile Flaming Gorge Reservoir and the Green River. The Flaming Gorge is characterized by expansive deserts and rugged mountains. The vast open country is home to large herds of mule deer, pronghorn, and wild horses. The Flaming Gorge Lake boasts great fishing and is the largest reservoir in Wyoming.

~Fort Bridger State Historic Site~

Fort Bridger State Historic Site maintains and interprets historic structures and remnants from its 5 eras of occupation which include the Mountain Men, Mormons, Military, Milkbarn/ Motel and Museum. The site also interprets the many trails that came through Fort Bridger including the Oregon Trail, California Trail, Mormon Pioneer Trail, Pony Express Trail, Overland Trail, Cherokee Trail and Lincoln Highway. The fort is not far off the interstate and is a great place to stop, relax and learn our history.

Visit Jim Bridger's famous trading post on The Oregon Trail as well as the fort built by the US Army and the old hotel on the Lincoln Highway.

The Fort Bridger Rendezvous is an annual reenactment of fur trading as it happened from 1825 to 1840 between mountain men, Native Americans, fur trappers and traders. The event takes place at Fort Bridger, Wyoming on first weekend of September. This family-friendly event is one of the largest mountain man gatherings in the nation.

~Historic South Pass~

South Pass City has a variety of interesting and educational activities for visitors throughout the summer. Take a walk through the restored townsite, where you will visit family cabins, a hotel and restaurant, the jail, and other historic buildings. When the presence of volunteer staff permits you can enjoy an ice cold sarsaparilla and a game of billiards on a restored 1860s period table and experience what shopping was like in an early 1900s general store. Each day you can pan for gold in the clear waters of Willow Creek, don't forget to pick up a vial to keep your gold in from the Dance Hall Gift Shop on your way into the site.

For folks with as much interest in nature as history, South Pass City is home to three different hiking trails where you can enjoy viewing some of the area's wide array of wildlife, while still learning about the history of the area from interpretive signs on the trails.

The Continental Divide National Scenic Trail (CDT) also passes through town. Popular among serious hikers and mountain bikers, the CDT runs the length of the Rocky Mountains from Canada to Mexico.

~Killpecker Sand Dunes~

The Killpecker Sand Dunes, located north of Rock Springs, are North America's largest active sand dune field, offering activities like ATVing, sandboarding, hiking, and wildlife viewing (including rare desert elk) amidst stunning volcanic formations like Boar's Tusk, managed by the BLM for recreation and conservation in a vast "living" landscape.

~Pilot Butte Wild Horse Scenic Loop~

The 24-mile self-guided Pilot Butte Wild Horse Scenic Tour can begin in either Green River or Rock Springs. Travelers should plan on approximately 1.5 hours to complete the tour, most of which is on a gravel road.

Watch for wild horses between Rock Springs and 14-Mile Hill, and all the way across the top of White Mountain. Although this is a relatively dry area with sparse vegetation, it is also home to a variety of wild animals, including pronghorn, elk, deer, rabbits, coyotes, hawks, eagles and sage-grouse, among others. Wildlife viewing is best in the early morning and late afternoon hours.

~Pioneer Trails~

Sweetwater County, Wyoming is criss-crossed by several historic pioneer trails which helped transport goods, wagon trains, mail service and more, eventually settling the West in the 1800s.
No other place in the United States has more miles of still-visible pioneer trails than Sweetwater County. On your next road trip, make sure to take a detour and see one or all of these historic trails. You’ll feel an indescribable sense of wonder and excitement as you experience the area’s rugged history.

~The Reliance Tipple~

In the 1800s, the mining and railroad industries gave birth to towns throughout much of Wyoming, many of which have all but disappeared. But the spirit of one of these mining towns still lingers near Rock Springs at the historic Reliance Tipple.

Built entirely by the Union Pacific Coal Company, the town of Reliance came into existence in the first decade of the 20th century. To handle the massive amount of coal that was being mined, the railroad built a tipple in town, where millions of tons of coal were sized and sorted by men, women and machines, and then loaded onto waiting railroad cars. In 1936, a new tipple was built entirely of steel and iron, which today is visited by history buffs who seek the rich mining stories of old.

Today, you can get a sense of what turn-of-the-century mining was like by taking a self-guided tour of Reliance Tipple. No need to bring a pickaxe though — coal is no longer mined here, and any spirits you might come across mean you no harm.

~Rock Springs Historical Museum~

The Rock Springs Historical Museum features both permanent and rotating exhibits that showcase the industries and people that helped build Rock Springs and the surrounding area.

Artifacts, photographs and interpretative displays relating to the history of the building itself, coal mining, the Union Pacific Railroad, famous outlaws Butch Cassidy and Calamity Jane, and the 56 Nationalities that make up the heritage of Rock Springs are all on display.

~Seedskadee Wildlife Refuge~

In the distance the Wind River Mountain Range to the north and the Wyoming Range to the west provide the snowmelt that sustains the Green River which flows through Seedskadee National Wildlife Refuge. The Green River is an oasis that bisects the high desert sagebrush steppe of southwest Wyoming. Surrounding sagebrush steppe is nearly a desert with an average of 4-8" of annual precipitation. The river corridor is vital for more than 300 species of resident and migrant wildlife, ranging from moose, pronghorn, elk, sage grouse, trumpeter swans, Wilsons warblers, bitterns to short horned lizards, kokanee salmon and cutthroat trout. The abundant open space allows the refuge to offer a number of public recreation opportunities.

Seedskadee provides numerous recreation opportunities to hundreds of visitors every year. People enjoy viewing the unique scenery and diverse wildlife, whether boating, driving, horseback riding, bird/wildlife watching, photographing, hiking, hunting, fishing, or taking part in historical interpretation. Regulation of recreation activities allow for public enjoyment of the Refuge while still protecting the wildlife and habitats found on the unique landscape along the Green River in southwestern Wyoming's sagebrush steppe.

~Sweetwater County Historical Museum~

Established in 1967, the museum is housed in a renovated 1931 post office building and contains a collection of several thousand artifacts, a large historical photograph collection, and local history research material.
Discover the rich cultural heritage of southwestern Wyoming at the Sweetwater County Historical Museum. Explore the stories of Native Americans, explorers, fur trappers, travelers of overland trails, railroad workers, coal miners, cowboys, outlaws such as Butch Cassidy, sheepherders, homesteaders, business people, trona miners, and oil and gas workers.

~Sweetwater County Events Complex and Speedway~

With the beauty of White Mountain as a natural backdrop, the Sweetwater Events Complex in Rock Springs aims to keep smiles on families' faces all year-round.
At 320 acres in size, this enormous facility is one of Wyoming’s largest, most versatile events complexes, hosting Wyoming’s Big Show, National High School Finals Rodeo, recreational shows, holiday celebrations, circuses, fairs, auctions, livestock and equestrian events and much more. And with 365 days of Wyoming-sized entertainment, there’s sure to be something fun for your family whether you plan to stay or just pass through.
Decorators and green thumbs will love Southwest Wyoming’s Home and Garden Show. Gunslingers can feast their eyes at the Wasatch Gun Shows. Cowboys can get their fill of the west at the Red Desert Roundup Rodeo, USTRC Team Roping and loads of other rodeos.

If you can’t get enough of the sweet roar of engines, you won’t want to miss out on the races happening at the Sweetwater County Speedway, located at the Sweetwater Events Complex.
With summers packed full of motocross match-ups, stock car races and full-contact demolition derbies, nearly every weekend has something under the hood for you.
Stock car races are scheduled throughout June, July and August, with racers polling for the track championship as the checkered flag flies in late August. You’ll have several opportunities all summer to watch the pocket-sized power of Dwarf Cars U.S.A. as professional drivers scream around the track in these five-eighths scale replicas that pack some serious horsepower punch.
For those who prefer two-wheeled action, there are plenty of motocross and BMX races to fill your calendar with dirt-flinging fun. And if you’re more into the crunch of metal, the firefighter-union sponsored demolition derby usually takes place in mid-August.

~Western Wyoming Community College~
~Natural History Museum~

Tens of millions of years before humans shook the ground in Sweetwater County, dinosaurs thundered across Southwest Wyoming. To witness the size and majesty of these earliest residents of the area, you can see five life-size replicas at Western Wyoming Community College in Rock Springs.

Although archaeologists have found fossils of these monsters all over Wyoming, the most prized specimens were taken to the big natural history museums in the east. So in 1989, locals began a fund-raising campaign to return Wyoming’s dinosaurs back to where they first roamed.

~White Mountain Golf Course~

The White Mountain Golf Course is a 27-hole championship course that is one of the best public golf courses in the state of Wyoming!

White Mountain Golf Course is open from daylight to dark, seven days a week during the season, which runs from late March to early November. Hours may vary due to weather.

~White Mountain Petroglyphs~

Discover the White Mountain Petroglyphs near Rock Springs, where you will find a unique version of southwest Wyoming’s history told through etchings in the sandstone walls of White Mountain.

The Plains and Great Basin Native Americans who lived in this area (roughly 200 to 1,000 years ago) left behind a legacy of their lifestyle in the form of hundreds of fascinating carvings. Whether your interests are photography, history or hiking, you can enjoy all of them at this incredible, sacred site.
